600 Scantily Clad
Driven to Street
By Bowery Blaze

Two Lodging Houses and Big Tenement Emptied in Zero Weather.

More than 600 persons, mostly Bowery lodging house inmates, were driven from their beds into the cold by a fire in Emil Wagner's restaurant at No. 103 Bowery early to-day. Many of the men were almost naked as they fled to the street. They were sheltered in neighboring lodging houses.

The occupants of No. 81 and 83 Chrystie Street, a tenement house, were also driven out and men, women and children, all scantily clad, had to find shelter in other buildings.

The fire was discovered by Policeman Dolan, who turned in an alarm and his call for help brought Policemen Weckesser and Robinson. The three rushed upstairs to the Home Hotel, cheap sleeping place for men above the burning restaurant. George Irwin, the night clerk, was unaware that fire was raging below, although by that time the rear of the building was very smoky.

One of those three men rescued Dolan. He got him and 100 others in the Boot Hotel, similar institution north. All were driven from lines of home to Borton. The York Hotel, adjoining to the south, were also emptied.
