ANCHORAGE. (AP)
Clifford Groh, Anchorage attorney, charged Friday he has found numerous irregularities in voting in nine precincts of the Second Division in the primary election.
Groh told the Anchorage Times he thought the irregularities would be sufficient grounds for throwing out the entire precinct voting because there is no way of separating legal from illegal ballots.
In seven precincts, he said, more ballots were counted than were officially cast. The proof, Groh related, was obtained by totaling the votes for national committeeman and coming up, in each instance, with a total greater than the number of voters in the precinct.
"It appears," Groh said, "the voters were given both Republican and Democratic ballots and cast them instead of using just one ballot as they should."
He said the same type of irregularity was found in the presidential preference total in two other precincts. Precincts in which Groh said he found the irregularities were Mountain Village, Noorvik, Wales, Selawik, Golovin, Shishmaref, Wainwright, Shaktoolik and Hooper Bay.
Throwing out the ballots in these precincts could materially improve the lead held by Walter Hickel over Henry Benson for Republican National Committeeman. Benson would lose 156 votes in these precincts and Hickel 36.
Groh said he probably would ask the canvassing board in Juneau and Governor Heintzleman to throw out the votes.
