The Militia.
It would be worth while to consider the question, if the time has not arrived for arming thoroughly, organizing and drilling the militia of this State. The times are perilous. There are daring and unscrupulous men in this State, who would create a revolution here if an opportunity should present itself. And before the great war now going on shall be terminated they may very possibly conclude that it has presented itself. They very well know, as everybody knows, that this State is firmly fixed on the side of the Union; but everybody just as well knows that this is no argument with a secession traitor. Missouri and Kentucky pronounced unmistakably for the Union, yet we see these secession fiends waging a merciless war for the conquest and subjugation of the above named States. In short, there is no style of logic comprehensible by the secesh mind, save such as comes from the lips of a risted cannon. The Union men of this State desire peace, and to secure it, no way seems as effective as to be fully prepared for war. Let the next Legislature look to this matter. The air is even now filled with rumors of conspiracies abroad which are, at a time deemed suitable, to ripen into open revolt, when the black flag of treason is to be unfurled in the free air of this golden State. Then let us be ready.
