For The Record
When the 1958 legislative campaign rolls around Republicans may make much of the tax increases put on the books by this year's Democratically-controlled legislature. Therefore it should be noted for the record that (1) 56 per cent of all Republican House member votes on tax increases hitting individual taxpayers were for the tax increases; (2) only 41 per cent of all Republican House member votes were for the several moderate tax increases proposed for corporations. Democrats, for the most part, voted for higher taxes on individuals, and, overwhelmingly for higher taxes on corporations; (3) Republicans, almost to the man, supported imposition of a general sales tax on Montana people. Only two of 59 House Dems voted for such a tax.
Republicans may also attempt to make much over the "spending habits" of the Democratic legislature. Here, too, the roll call record of the House shows that Republicans not only went along, but, in some instances attempted to increase the amounts of money to be spent in the biennium just ahead.
