The Southern Baptist Convention, which assembled last Thursday at Mobile, Alabama, was largely attended by delegates from the different Baptist churches in the South. Rev. Dr. J. P. Boyce, of South Carolina, presided over the body. On Friday the convention discussed the subject of the removal of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from Greenville, South Carolina, to Louisville, Kentucky, and resolutions were adopted approving the action of the board of trustees in locating the seminary at Louisville when a sufficient endowment of at least $500,000 should be raised. $300,000 of that amount to be raised in the State of Kentucky and the remainder in other States, coupled with another condition, that the convention recommend the board to raise $200,000 outside of Kentucky, to be used for the location and endowment of the seminary elsewhere, if Kentucky did not raise $300,000.
The report on domestic missions showed that the board had employed last year fifty-nine domestic and twenty-seven Indian missionaries, and that the several States which do their own work, but report through the board, have sixty-five additional missionaries, making one hundred and fifty-one in all. Add to this number the missionaries of the State boards of Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina and South Carolina-none of whom have reported their work to the general board, although they each have more missionaries than the States that have reported. Virginia has nearly fifty State missionaries. The Baptists of the South sustained last year at least three hundred home missionaries.
