Full Text

Private Letters from Madrid say, that the Negotiation carrying on between their Most Christian and Catholick Majesties successfully advances; towards which the Address of the Count de la Marck, Ambassador from France, has not a little contributed.

It's assured, that the Marriage of the Infant Don Philip with the eldest Daughter of France, is actually concluded on, provided that the Catholick King shall accede to the Treaty of Vienna, and the Emperor give the Investiture of the Dutches of Parma and Placentia to the Infant, as soon as the Marriage shall be consummated, on Condition nevertheless, that the Courts of Naples and Spain shall make a solemn Renunciation of their Rights or Pretensions to the Imperial Estate and moveable Effects of Tuscany.

The second of these Conditions, is what the Court of France takes great Pains to obtain the Emperor's Compliance with.

There is likewise much Talk of another Treaty of Marriage being on Foot between the Dauphin and the Infanta Donna Maria Theresa.

Should these Marriages take Effect, of which there is but too great a Probability; by such an Alliance, the Monarchies of France and Spain, and indeed the whole House of Bourbon, would become so intimately and firmly united, as to render themselves more than ever formidable to all Europe.

Event Details

Private letters from Madrid report successful advancement in negotiations between the Most Christian (France) and Catholick (Spain) Majesties, aided by French Ambassador Count de la Marck. The marriage of Infant Don Philip to the eldest daughter of France is assuredly concluded, contingent on the Catholick King acceding to the Treaty of Vienna and the Emperor granting investiture of the Duchies of Parma and Piacenza to the Infant post-consummation, provided Naples and Spain renounce rights to Tuscany's imperial estate and effects. France presses for the Emperor's compliance on the second condition. There is much discussion of another marriage treaty between the Dauphin and Infanta Donna Maria Theresa, which, if realized, would intimately unite the French and Spanish monarchies and the entire House of Bourbon, making them more formidable to Europe.
