Dennis Tourney, an Influential Stockbridge Indian, Who Served in Civil War, Killed.
Shawano, Wis., May 2.-[Special.]-Dennis Tourkey, a Civil war veteran, and a member of the Stockbridge tribe, was killed Saturday on the reservation, eight miles north of this city. Johnny Frank has been placed under arrest, charged with murder. Frank is a Menominee Indian. Tourkey and Frank had both been drinking. Tourkey was an influential member of his tribe, and after the Civil war, in which he served, he became a sachem in the Stockbridge council. Frank is said to be an outlaw and is feared by all the Indians on the reservation. Tourkey's body was found yesterday badly mangled and giving evidence that he had been beaten to death. As the alleged crime was committed on the reservation, a legal question arises as to whether the state or federal courts have jurisdiction, especially as the defendant is an Indian, and a ward of the federal government. Frank was taken before Justice Bold this morning for examination, but the matter was postponed to Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, to await the arrival of the United States marshal.
