SLUSH FUNDS
Senator James A. Reed of Missouri, chairman of the primary election "slush fund" investigating committee has announced that he will not be a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 1928. He has served for eighteen years and desires to resume the more lucrative law practice.
Too bad men of the calibre of Mr. Reed are not in position to put light of day on the "slush funds" of Alaska. The Honorable Griggsby of Ketchikan at $500 per month until after the fall election. Friend White "Stroller" as campaign manager in the Juneau district to get more for recopying the Indian clex from the pen of a drunken editor; Charley Carter who failed to land a job as deputy marshal gets a sop of $250 a month. The Empire of course is an eleemosynary institution and all the advertising the "independents" are getting is because the "Johnny Walker" brand believes in principal and less of principle. The expense of the "lily white" "independents" (?) will run into figures that proportionately will make the Pennsylvania primary look like a piker.
"Contributions" in some instances have been declared to be blackmail. But then why should such little ratters be of interest to a gullible public. For god and "country" in the press but the splitting of the swag is always behind closed doors. But closed doors are not enough to hide an editor who gets so damnably pifflicated as to fall off his chair and unable to get back on to the chair. That part even at that, might be overlooked for the "sanctity of the ballot box."
As Americans we live and as Americans we participate in the affairs of government. The right to dictate government is not that of Canadians who secure citizenship on the evidence of dead men, or of men whose shady records are halitosis to decent citizenship. But such is the way of political parties in Alaska whose whole creed is hate and domination through their own particular brand of politics. Perhaps, if we had a few Jim Reeds in Alaska the brazen affrontery of peddlers of slush funds would be more circumspect in their advertising of salaries of campaign managers and other henchmen and perhaps the campaign insofar as certain newspapers in Alaska would be much less enthusiastic.
