THE PROVIDENCE MOB.

Notwithstanding all that has been said in the Columbian, and Public Advertiser about the Providence Mob, and the destruction of a Privateer which was preparing to sail, it turns out that there was neither a riot, nor any loss of property. The circumstance, which gave rise to the story, is thus stated in the Providence American of Friday:--N. Y. E. Post.

"A small two masted Block Island fishing boat, which a decent man would scarcely venture himself in to cross our river, was purchased. it seems, for the purpose of fitting into a privateer. On the night of the 20th inst she was taken from the ship yard, at Eddy's Point, and hauled a little way down the river, where a hole was made through her bottom probably with a jackknife, and she filled with water. Next morning, however, she was in plain sight, and was immediately taken back to the ship yard and fitted for sea. The damage done to her could not exceed five dollars. Who took her from the ship-yard is not known, and of so little consequence did the owners of her (if she has any) consider it, that they did not offer a reward. This miserable boat, which sailed from here on Sunday last, is made into a schooner of some considerable importance, if we were to judge from the statement of the "Phænix."

"If this affair could be sifted to the bottom, we have good reason to believe that this boat was taken and sunk by some of our orderly jacobins, on purpose to make a talk. The "hungry dogs," who belong to the Phænix department, have been for some time short of stuff to work upon, and thought, no doubt, by this means to pick a bone with impunity. This transaction, we presume, will turn out yet, like the Newburyport printer, who threw his types in fire, to afford him an opportunity to abuse the federalists. What a pity, that these friends of the people are so hard pushed?"
