Streets Being Put In Shape and Committee Urges That Residents Help by Decorating Their Homes.

The work of getting things in condition for the fruit fair is steadily progressing and the committees appointed for the various purposes in connection with the exhibition are meeting with success. The committee appointed to solicit subscriptions to insure the expense of giving the fair are finding merchants and business men ready, and willing to subscribe and a great deal of interest is being manifested everywhere in the city and valley in the coming exhibit.

Workmen have been engaged for the past few days in putting the streets in a better condition and in removing trees that were unsightly or an obstruction to traffic. The executive committee of the fair association is anxious that every effort be made to have the city put on a gala appearance during the days of the exhibition and suggest that houses be decorated with bunting and the streets lined with small fir trees. They would like to have every business place and house show some indication that the fair is being held at Hood River so that visitors here at that time will go away with a pleasant impression of the great interest taken here in the growing of fruit.

The exhibition building will be so much larger this year than ever before that it will allow of a display of 40 boxes of fruit and do away with most of the waste exhibits, which it has heretofore been necessary to make owing to lack of room.

This feature it is thought will make the fair far more attractive and better than it has ever been and give a far better idea of the high quality and quantity of the fruit

At a meeting of the executive committee Friday, year old dlo.td for lecesa ryeqaditucesieanotiea with as follows.

Committee on premiums-$10
Decoration of buildings-$10
Hood River band, day and evening for three days-$125.
Transportation-$50
Employees and night watchman about building-$35.
Entertainment committee-$100.
Incidental expenses-$50.

Mr. Emery, of the Hood River Cider and Vinegar factory, has informed the committee that if the growers will furnish apples the cider company will provide cider for patrons of the fair, free of charge and they ask growers to see that the apples are forthcoming.

White Salmon and Mosier are preparing fine displays for the fair and the former will hold an exhibit of its products at that place October 6th, after which it will bring it to Hood River to be placed on exhibition.

The committee on transportation report that they have already received assurances from the O. R. & N. of a reduced fare from points along its line as far east as Pendleton and west to Portland. It has also signified its willingness to make a cheap rate in conjunction with the Southern Pacific from Willamette points as far away as Salem. The committee is now making an effort to have the railroad company sell tickets to passengers going through Hood River during the days of the fair on the local with the privilege of stopping over here until the departure of No. 2. This will give intending visitors about an hour in which to view the exhibit without placing them at any inconvenience They can step off the train almost in to the door of the fair building and stay until they hear the approach of the train. The railroad company is not ready just at present to announce the rate for the fair, but it is expected that it will do so in a few days. It is hoped that it will also be possible to secure a special rate from Portland and return for one day that will be so reasonable as to attract many who would not otherwise come and that railroad company will make it all excursion affair.

The call for the meeting of the State Irrigation association which takes place on the first two days of the fair has been issued and a programme provided for the occasion. The meeting will be held at the Opera House October 11th and 12th and is expected to be well attended. The building will be decorated and put in shape for the irrigationists and they will be entertained at the hotels and homes of residents who are in a position to have guests.
