"Head-Quarters, Mayence, Dec. 13.
"Citizens Directors,
"The troops of the Republic are now in possession of Mayence, and the forts of Cassel; they entered this morning. The Emperor's troops evacuated them yesterday, and I should have entered immediately, if the troops of the Empire, which consisted of 8 battalions, could have found means to transport their baggage, &c. I gave them 24 hours to complete the evacuation; and I was assured of two gates, one of the city of Mayence, the other of Cassel. The whole is now evacuated. The Austrian troops marched off in two columns; one three battalions strong, by Ulm, passing by Heidelberg and Heilsbronn; the other, containing six battalions, passing by Aschaffenburg, on their way to Bohemia.
"The troops of the different circles have taken the roads to their own countries."
