Newark, October 23—Two hundred persons witnessed a short, sharp and decisive prize fight in East Newark last night. It was a bare knuckle fight for $500, and the combatants were Hugh Coyne, of this city, and John Fox, of Chicago. The arrangements were made a fortnight ago and were kept very quiet. Both men were on hand promptly at 7 o'clock at the rendezvous and were escorted to an old barn by their backers and friends. A ring was pitched and time was called at exactly 8 o'clock. Fox is nearly six feet tall and weighs 150 pounds. Coyne is nearly three inches shorter and weighs two pounds less than the Western man. His second was John Martin, of this city, and Frank Cavanagh, the fighter, served in the same capacity for Fox, while Charles Grimes of this city held the stakes. When John Mack called time the two men faced each other and made a pretence of shaking hands. Then Fox led out with his right and planted a blow on Coyne's cheek. Coyne tried to retaliate, but was neatly stopped. Fox then forced the fighting and hammered Coyne unsparingly until the round ended. The second round was savage from the start, but Fox seemed to have all the best of it and slugged his stocky little antagonist unmercifully. At the end of the first minute Coyne was whipped, but he stood up manfully until Fox lodged a terrible hammer blow on his jugular vein and stretched him on the floor. Then Martin acknowledged that his man was defeated, and the money was handed over to Fox. There was no gate money, and all that was taken in was voluntarily contributed by the spectators.
