Full Text

Stealing and killing a Cow for the Hide!—This dastardly crime was actually perpetrated, some time since, by Barney Long, who was convicted of the offence at the late sitting of the Mayor's Court, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment at Sing Sing. The villain went out to the farm of Mr. Isaiah Townsend, drove off, killed and skinned a fine young cow, of the best English breed, worth $50. He then left the carcass, and brought the hide into the city, and sold it for about two dollars! For such a crime as this, the scoundrel should have been cow skinned till the hide was off his own back, and then sent to the State Prison. Long's father was sent to the State Prison, many years ago, for robbing a pedlar. This, compared with the son's crime, was a mere peccadillo.
