Verdict Nearing In 'Torch' Killing

WINSTON-SALEM, July 22.—(UP).—Defense and prosecution attorneys presented closing arguments to a jury of nine married men and three bachelors today in the "torch murder" trial of Sadie Lawson, 35-year-old illiterate tobacco factory worker.

After two prosecution witnesses had testified, Sadie told them she poured gasoline on her invalid mother's bed and set fire to it.

The jury heard her testify she "didn't remember" confessing to the crime.

W. G. Hobson, Winston-Salem fire chief, and Police Lieutenant P. E. Ledwell, who investigated the fire and found the mother's charred body in her bed at the Lawson home, said on the stand they heard the factory worker explain that her mother "called me a vile name, and we quarreled and I poured gasoline on her bed and set fire to it."
