PROGRESS OF TEMPERANCE.

The large hotel, known as Stevens's Tavern, at East Brookfield the only place where intoxicating drinks were sold in that neighborhood, and where, of course, all the unfortunate tipplers resorted to get their means of self-destruction. On the 1st of the present month, in consequence of a strong application of moral suasion, the proprietor of the house, venerable for his years, and respectable as a man of wealth and great enterprise, made the resolution so much desired, and turned the monster out of his premises. This event was a matter of so much interest to the people of the town of North Brookfield, in which the village of East Brookfield is partly situated, that they turned out to the number of about two hundred and fifty persons, comprising many of the most respectable inhabitants, and rode down to the renovated tavern, and took a public dinner, as an expression of their joy, and a testimony of their approbation of the change.

Mr. Freeman Walker presided at the table, and in a brief address introduced the object of the meeting. Rev. Dr. Snell, one of the earliest pioneers of the temperance reform, presented many interesting remarks, and was followed by Rev. Mr. Ainsworth, Rev. Thomas Adams, and Professor Walker. Temperance glees were interspersed with the addresses, and the whole affair passed off quite pleasantly. The house was re-dedicated and re-baptised in the name of Temperance, and a sum of money raised to furnish an appropriate sign for the hotel, and lectures on total abstinence in the village.
