Port au Prince. Sept. 1. 1822.
On Friday last, the 30th of August, public tranquility was for a short time disturbed in this capital by an unexpected event. The citizen Darfour repaired to the Chamber of Representatives and presented a memorial which aimed at the destruction of our institutions and the revolution of the state. This man, well known as possessing a seditious and dissatisfied character, has evinced in this circumstance that he would stop short at nothing when agitating a conspiracy against the government and the prosperity of the Republic. This incendiary memorial was read and listened to with horror and contempt by a great majority of the members of the Chamber. The people having understood the contents of the memorial, sallied forth in crowds into different parts of the city without any order from Government, and arrested the citizens Darfour, Beranger, Laborde, Pierre, Andre, Noel Piron, St. Martin and St. Laurent. These men, accused of conspiring against the government, have been conducted to the prisons of the city, where they will have a speedy trial. When that has taken place, the public will be informed of all the particulars of this unfortunate circumstance.
