Full Text

The Pope is feeling his way back to Rome.

His Manifesto will be found on the first page of the paper; there is not a word of liberty in it—even his early notions of reform have all vanished like the "morning cloud and early dew." The efforts of Mazzini and Garibaldi go for nought (for present). Instead of a Republic founded upon the "ruins of two empires," that of the Caesars and the Church—we find the Pope and Cardinals the tribunal of the Vicar General—the prison of the Inquisition and that of the Castle of St. Angelo on either side of St. Peters'—in short, another reign of Gregory XVI. to grace the annals of the 19th century, at the high meridian of its advances in Science, Religion and General Civilization! Liberty has its seed as well as the Church, the blood of martyrs to either, being the common germ to both.

His Holiness takes up his residence for the present, at Benevento, a city of Naples, but belonging to the Papal dominions, where he was expected to be by the first of October.
