WHITBY, March 5. By Letters from Captain Cockrill, belonging to this Port, dated at Oporto, January 30th, we are informed, that as he was crossing the Bay of Biscay, on the 22d of January, he was chased by a ship of 24 Guns, which he took to be a French Frigate; but that before she came up with them the said ship overset, and all Hands on board her went to the Bottom. Next Morning he saw a little Vessel coming out to sea, with an Intention (as is supposed) to fish; but when this Vessel drew near them, she all on a sudden run along side of them, and boarded them with about 30 Men, on which they endeavoured as well as they could to secure their Hatches, and betook themselves to their close Quarters, where they continued to defend themselves more than 8 Hours, during which Time they killed 10 Frenchman, and wounded several others, without any Loss on their side, except two of their Company being slightly wounded. At last, having got two of their great Guns to bear on the French Sloop, which lay along side of them, they fired into her, and in a few Minutes she sunk outright, and every Man on board her perished. This disheartened the French Men so much, that 14 of them who yet remained alive on their Decks, immediately called out for Quarters, and delivered themselves up Prisoners of War. These were accordingly secured, and next Day put on board an English Man of War, that Capt. Cockrill fell in with in the Bay.
