Fighting at Canfield Gate Blamed On Union
F. H. Taylor, personnel manager of Briggs Manufacturing company, falsely accused Jack Clifford and three members of Local 212 with the beating up this week of a non-union man working in Dept. 377, Briggs Mack plant.
Jack Clifford, chief steward of the department, was seen at 10904 Mack avenue, a Local 212 office, at 3:10 p. m. Over 12 people saw him at that time. The alleged fight took place at 3:05 p. m. Thursday.
Taylor took the word of the non-union man but would not bring him face to face with the men he accused.
The alleged fracas, according to hearsay, took place on city property and not on company grounds.
Jack Clifford and the three men accused were not involved and the company should make a public apology to these men. They should take into consideration that possibly the man had enemies in his private life. They should not try to pin every trouble onto the union.
Local 212 will demand full reinstatement of these men and insist that back pay be granted for all time lost.
Negotiations for reinstatement will reopen Monday. Local 212 will be represented by Emil Mazey, Local Organizer, the Briggs management by F. H. Taylor.
