Not one senior was listed on the squad. Strength concentrated on the junior and sophomore level. Three juniors who also saw considerable service were forwards Tom Keller and Jerry Greenberg and guard Ron Porter.
It was a freshman who won the scoring honors as Clarence Straughn tallied 350 points to become the highest scoring guard in Wayne history. He also moved into third place for the most points in a single season. Only Charlie Primas and John Kline have scored more.
Brown Second
Sophomore center George Brown grabbed second spot in the race with 327 points as he played in every Wayne game.
Brown was also the squad's leading rebounder with 347, an average of 15.1 per game. Tom Keller, a Detroit junior, was third in Wayne history with a 67 per cent average.
Only 2.7 Off
Only 27 points separated the squad from a winning season. The Tartars hit on 39 per cent of their shots, while holding the opposition to 35 per cent. It was at the free throw line that Wayne had its greatest trouble even though it improved from .605 to .609 over a year ago.
The team saw the opposition hit the highest free throw mark in history with 244 points.
As a team this year's Wayne squad averaged 67 points per game with the opposition's mark of 69.7. This was borne out by the record which showed eight games lost by five points or less.
Wayne's greatest triumphs were a 71 to 66 win over Penn State in the Motor City Tournament and a 66 to 62 victory over St. Francis of Pennsylvania. For the first time in four years Wayne failed to at least take one of the intra-city games with the University of Detroit.
The 1955-56 season will see Wayne's formal entry into the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Wayne will play six games with PAC schools and schedule 12 more with its old rivals. The 1955-56 schedule will list only 18 games instead of the 23 played this year.
