Parks and Pleasure Grounds

It matters not much where such desirable improvements are located, so that the points are chosen with due reference to the future. At present we have opportunities of making judicious purchases within and without the limits of the municipality, which ought not to be neglected. Boston has not only her fine common, the pride and boast of her citizens, but she has extended largely, of late years, its ancient limits, by filling up and ornamenting the low lands in its vicinity. New York has purchased the ground for a noble park at an expense of some five million of dollars. Philadelphia has some sixty acres laid out in squares in various sections of the city, and not content with these attractive places of resort, is striving to emulate New York in providing more extensive grounds for the pleasure and health of the public. Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah and every seaport has its pleasure grounds for public resort, and why should we be behind them all? Let us have one or more parks.—Norfolk Argus.
