FIRE.—Chestertown seems to be a devoted
village. It has again been visited with a
destructive fire. Before day-light on Monday
morning last, a gentleman who was loading a cannon
to be fired in celebration of the day, left a lighted
candle near a keg of powder in the second
story of a store, in which the post office was also
kept. He had scarcely left the building, when
it was blown to atoms. Fire was communicated
by the explosion, to three other buildings, which
were consumed. The progress of the fire was
then arrested by extraordinary exertions of the
citizens. Estimated loss $10,000.
