Valley Telephones
Pass 100,000 Mark

Continuing rapid telephone expansion has been emphasized once again with the announcement that there are now over 100,000 telephones in the Greater Phoenix area. This area embraces Litchfield, Glendale, Tolleson, Sunnyslope, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Chandler, as well as Phoenix. H. K. Richmond, Phoenix district manager for the Mountain States Telephone Telegraph Co. pointed out that it was just six years ago, in March, 1947, that the sum of the telephones in these exchanges passed the 50,000 mark.
The Greater Phoenix area now ranks 54th in the nation in telephone installations, just behind cities like Grand Rapids, Jersey City, Nashville and Sacramento.
Surprisingly enough, Phoenix runs ahead of such well known population centers as Albany, Des Moines, Norfolk, South Bend, Jacksonville and Chattanooga.
Richmond also said that the 100,000 telephones in service represented an increase of approximately 12,000 telephones in the past 12 months and over 6,000 during the first six months of 1953. He indicated that this expansion rate of 1,000 per month that has been maintained during the last year is expected to continue throughout the remainder of 1953 and into next year.
