ANCHORAGE — (Special) - A proposal that the two candidates for Alaska's delegate to Congress appear in public debates to clarify the campaign issues came Friday from Stanley McCutcheon, Democratic national committeeman.
McCutcheon sent a challenge to Robert C. Reeve to appear in the debates sometime in September. He said Delegate Bartlett has agreed to appear.
"If the Republican candidate is willing, the Democrats would be glad to appear in a series of debates in various Alaska communities," McCutcheon said.
"This series would serve the same purpose as the great Lincoln-Douglas debates served in Illinois. History shows that the Illinois debates served a wonderful purpose. There is no reason why our candidates in Alaska can't take a page out of history and stage debates in Alaska."
