It is extremely gratifying to note that at long last the AFL-CIO Executive Council has decided to crack down on the recalcitrant Southern unions, which have tried to stymie "Operation Dixie" and begin its great organizational drive among the 700,000 textile workers currently unorganized.
It seems symbolic that the council should begin its campaign in the Eastern South, where most of the textile plants are located.
It is symbolic because the textile industry in the South has been the most prejudiced against Negro workers and its employes have been perhaps the most cooperative of all in preventing Negroes from being hired, and of course from being promoted when they were hired.
Headed by John R. Livingstone, a veteran labor official, over 300 organizers are scheduled to "invade" the South, particularly the Eastern South.
It is especially gratifying to note the determination of the AFL-CIO Executive Council not to allow one union in the area to veto the organizational drive in any way; and it is certain that the full power of organized labor will be used against dissident elements hoping vainly to hamper the drive by injecting racial prejudice and discrimination into it.
This is a joint effort of white and black labor to halt the vicious paternalism which has perpetuated a feudal system in the textile industry and thus retarded the advancement of Southern labor as a whole.
