An occurrence transpired in this city yesterday that we may feel it our duty to treat of at some length at a future time. It was either the legal arrest of a slave, or the most unjust abduction of a colored man who is not a slave. If the former, the laws are and shall be paramount, and we will to the last uphold and defend those whose duty it is to administer and execute them; but if the latter, the subject shall never be silenced until justice is fully and entirely satisfied.
The name of the negro is Andrew Lewis. He was born in this city. His age is nineteen years. He was arrested by Officer Mulloy on a warrant, as a non-resident. He was taken before Justice Smith, who heard and dismissed the case. Immediately on his leaving the magistrate's office, two men in the street apprehended him, claiming him as a slave, and, as we understand, handcuffed him, and bore him from the city. -Republic.
