Full Text

Extract of a letter from a Gentleman at Philadelphia, dated June 8, 1779.

"The enemy have moved up the North river to attack the forts on the high lands. Generals Clinton, Knyphausen, and Vaughan, are out. Our army is in motion, and in the neighbourhood. General St. Clair at the head of the Pennsylvania troops was marching to get possession of the Clove, which place he wrote Congress he thought the enemy would try to get. Gen. McDougal has, it seems, thrown himself into fort Arnold at West Point. In short, we expect every day to hear that much blood has been spilt. General Washington is at a place called Pompton plains, in the Jerseys."
