It is now twelve years since the Forrest divorce case begun, and of course no one living expects to see the end. The tragedian sued his wife for divorce, and by one of those strange quirks which appear in law, the jury, so far from giving him a verdict, found one for his wife and gave her a snug alimony, say $3,000 per year. Ned has kept the matter agoing in the most proper manner, until it is once more before the Court of Appeals.
Quite a wonder it is that all the original parties are still alive. Both husband and wife (that were) still exist, though neither of them were present last week. There is no need of this, since they send their lawyers and their cash. Of course Forrest foots all the bills, and feels no doubt happy in doing so. He is now a grass widower, and has nothing else to do with his money.
As you enter the court you are struck with the change in the looks of the counsel since they commenced the case. Charles O'Conor has really grown old since he took the job of defense. He stands bolt upright, and talks away in a brisk manner, but twelve years will tell on any one. He has got old in this famous case, and will be older before it will be closed. So also John Van Buren, another counsel, begins to look oldish too. His head is bald, and the side locks and aquiline nose make him the very picture of his father. It is evident that twelve years have not been lost on "Prince John."
