For The Tribune.

TO WASHINGTON. D. C.

Beautiful city of cities;
Star of America's pride:
Gem of her far-reaching splendors:
Crown of her orient side:
Heart of a glorious nation,
E'er may thy pulses beat
True to the measures of freedom.
True to humanity's heat.
True to the voicings of wisdom,
True to the throbbings of right,
True to the beacons of justice
True to the Priestess of light.
So, may thine arteries, Swelling
Full with a passionate flood.
Bear to thy signalling chambers
Naught but the truest life-blood.
Yea, may all evils that threaten
Glorious America free.
Die. ere the veins of the nation
Carry their poisonings to thee.
