Full Text

At length registry law for the city New Orleans has drawn its way through both Houses of the Legislature and become law. The Advocate has an article on this subject, in which the American party is abused for offering opposition to some of its most glaring and palpable defects. It came from the party in power, and where, pray, is there any equal power, with a right to shake its head, and say "nay," to anything upon its face, the impress-the official seal and sanction of authority! The time was, when Calhoun democracy was fashionable; that minorities were admitted to have some rights, but now the scene has shifted, and any man or set of men who dare oppose the edicts of a caucus, deserve to be branded as knaves, and fools. On this subject our neighbor says: But the "rich and rare" concomitant of the legislative dish was the opposition of the Know-Nothings when an able and well digested Registry Law was proposed. 'It was then that the cloven foot was exhibited. The opposition in the Senate, marked and decided, wisely concluded to dispense with reasons as surplusage.'
