SPECIAL TELEGRAM TO THE DISPATCH.

PHILADELPHIA, May 17.-The Smoky City lads pounded young Knell's pitching all over Forepaugh's Park to-day, but lost the game through errors by Carroll and Robinson. In spite of the clean hitting of both sides the game abounded with sharp fielding. The home team excelled in this respect. Hallman, Shindle and Sanders making some marvelous stops and catches. Knell was wild at times, and when he got the ball over the plate it was pounded in every direction. The most conspicuous man on the field was Manager Hanlon. The ease and nonchalance with which he smote the ball made the young Californian twirler weary.

HANLON'S BRILLIANT FIELDING was also a big feature of the game. Carroll caught a splendid game with the exception of the fifth inning when the Phillies won the game. The sturdy catcher also batted terrifically but young Hallman in right field robbed him of two three-baggers by wonderful catches. Corcoran, who is regarded as the best fielding shortstop in the Players' League, covered himself with glory, and his work was of such a brilliant order that ex-Manager Jimmy Fogarty, who witnessed the game from one of the boxes, pronounced him a wonder. "Jocko" Fields played well in left field and attends to that section in good style. Staley pitched a good game and with perfect support would have twirled his side to victory. The home team opened the game in a business-like manner and scored two runs on singles by Hallman and Milligan and Shindle's double.

JOCKO WAS THERE.

The Pittsburgs got their first run in the second inning when Fields hit for two bags and scored on Corcoran's single. They tied the score in the next inning on doubles by Beckley and Carroll. The fourth was a very busy inning and the visitors secured a quartet of runs on five successive singles. In the next inning Farrar made a single and Hallman a double, which, with Robinson's fumble and Beckley's dropped thrown ball, gave the home team three runs.

Three more singles and a sacrifice in the seventh gave the locals two more runs, and they added three more to their list in the next inning on Hanlon's muff, a force hit and Farrar's double. This lead was too much for the Pittsburgs, and the best they could do was to tally once in the last inning on Visner's slashing double and Fields' single. The score:

Philadelphia 3 0 2 3 0-10

Pittsburg.... 0 1 0 0 0 1-7
