DETAILS OF GIANT SOUTHEASTERN CANNERY MERGER AT SEATTLE PUBLISHED.
Additional details as to the recent announcement by the A. P., of the purchase of twenty-seven salmon canneries in Southeastern Alaska, by a group of Seattle business men, which item was briefly published in the Gateway some days ago is supplied by an article which appeared in the Seattle Daily Times of recent issue.
The article follows:
With a capitalization of about $12,000,000 and backed by powerful interests, the huge corporation being planning in Seattle for the purchase of twenty-seven pink salmon canneries in Southeastern Alaska, will place the industry in that part of the North on a paying basis for the first time in three or four years and bring still greater prosperity here.
This was the opinion expressed yesterday by men prominent in the industry who are formulating the plans for the purchase of the plants and their merger into one big corporation, the largest ever organized in the history of salmon packing in Alaska.
Not only the salmon industry with its thousands of employes but allied industries which furnish supplies for the plants and manufacturer fish-canning machinery, and the steamship companies which transport men, equipment and supplies to the North and bring back the harvest of salmon, will benefit from organization of the new corporation and the merger of the twenty-seven plants.
Greatest Distributing Center.
Seattle generally, as the greatest salmon distributing center in the world, will benefit in a financial way as the headquarters of the new corporation. and the industry will be saved by the elimination of the many operators and the organization of one big corporation for the production and sale of canned salmon.
While steps are being taken scientifically for the rehabilitation of salmon on Alaska, one of the aims of the new corporation will be to rehabilitate the industry.
Millions Invested.
Between $25,000,000 and $30,000,000 is invested in fishing in this state, which is yielding a production valued at $18,000,000 or $20,000,000 annually.
The plan for the purchase of the twenty-seven canneries in Southeastern Alaska is the most important move yet made in the industry to protect both investment and return.
A stabilized salmon industry in Southeastern Alaska, which will be one of the results of the merger of the plants under one operating corporation, will mean prosperity not only to the interests sharing in its profits, but also to business concerns furnishing supplies to the plants in the North.
Washington leads all states in the manufacture of fish-canning machinery with an investment in this industry of approximately $15,000,000 ad an annual output valued at between $1,000,000 and $20,000,000.
There have been too many companies engaged in the pink salmon packing industry of Southeastern Alaska and one of the results of the organization of the big corporation planned is to eliminate this 'handicap. effect economy in operation and do away with the duplicated organizations in that part of the North, it was pointed out.
Leaders in the plans for the organization of the new company said that the sardine packers by their cheaper operating expenses were underselling the salmon packers and lower production costs of canned salmon were necessary if the industry is to be saved.
Conservation of Fish.
Conservation of the fish also will result from the elimination of the many operators and the organization of one company. It was pointed out that the concerted move of the packers would not mean a great increase in production but a steady and profitable production at great reduced cost and consequently a lower price to the consumer as one of the first moves of the new corporation would be to meet the competition of sardine packers.
Recently six canneries controlled by Seattle interests were consolidated under one operating organization and the saving was enormous, it was explained yesterday. This consolidation is believed to have been the inspiration of those seeking to merge twenty-seven plants in Southeastern Alaska under one operating and marketing organization.
