Event Details
A severe tempest visited Ohio, with a whirlwind commencing near the west line of Licking county, proceeding northeast with a mile-wide sweep. It left no trees standing on nearly half a mile of its center line. The town of Burlington, ten miles north of Granville and containing 20 dwellings, was fully demolished: every dwelling uplifted from foundations, hurled in masses or pieces. Large trees seen high in the air turning in the vortex. Citizens of nearest towns relieved the distressed and houseless; physicians attended the wounded. Other towns suffered less severely.
