THE RAILROAD-EXPRESS SUIT.

The Portland News thus informs us of the last day's proceedings in the suit of Wells, Fargo & Co. against the Northern Pacific Railroad Company:

The arguments in the Wells, Fargo & Co.'s cases occupied the attention of the United States Circuit Court the whole of the session yesterday. The announcement that Clarence W. Seward would conclude the argument for the plaintiff attracted an audience that completely filled the court room. That the arguments of Mr. Seward attracted more than ordinary attention among the legal profession of this city, is evinced by the fact that more than fifty lawyers were counted among the audience at one time. Nor were they disappointed, for the address of the distinguished gentleman was an elegant specimen of forensic debate and legal acumen; not a ranting hurricane of words as is often heard from jury lawyers, but an address characterized by elegant diction, well rounded periods and classic learning. In opening his argument Mr. Seward took occasion to compliment the counsel for the defense upon the forcible and learned manner in which their arguments were presented the day before, and well he might, for the reasonings of Mr. Dolph on Thursday were well calculated to surprise a gentleman like Mr. Seward, who had never visited this coast before and who possibly expected to find in far-away Oregon nothing but country lawyers with whom to contend. He may have had a similar opinion of the judiciary, for he took the pains to translate his Latin quotations while addressing the court. The argument of Mr. McNaught in behalf of the Northern Pacific was an able exposition of the law as applicable to the case of the Northern Pacific in Washington Territory. To give even a synopsis of the points, theories and principles contained in these arguments is beyond the scope of an article of this kind. A portion of the audience outside the bar in the court room yesterday morning mistook Mr. McNaught for Mr. Seward, and many were the compliments bestowed upon his oratory, but when they learned that he was the gentleman from Seattle they spoke not a word. Thus do circumstances alter cases.

The arguments closed yesterday and the court adjourned until Monday next.
