NEW YORK, July 12.—The second play reading contest to be conducted by the Footlights Dramatic Club will open July 15 and run to September 15, it was announced by Ruth Ford, president, of 760 W. 221st street. Miss Ford a graduate with honors from Hunter College, said all persons who have written plays are eligible to enter the contest, but the contest will specialize on three act and one act plays. No limit is placed on the theme or treatment of the theme, but the club prefers a simplicity of form.
Two silver medals, accompanied by a certificate from the club will represent first and second prize, and two certificates will represent other prizes. Miss Ellen Johnson, 818 E. 22nd street, also a graduate of Hunter, is business manager of the club, and Sylvia Best, 1707 Van Buren, is secretary.
Last year the club conducted its first contest, which was won by Paul Stevens, Addie Davis and Theodore Brown. The plays were placed in the New Rochelle high school. Another play, "Within Our Hearts" was produced by the club last spring at Williams bridge which was written by Frank Anderson. The club plans to produce the winning play in this year's contest.
There are fifteen members of the club, most of whom are young college women. They are contacting well known actors and literary people to request that they act as judges of the contest.
