Full Text

PORTSMOUTH, May 4.

Wednesday morning about four o'clock Captain Bartholomew Gooding, in a brig coming from Barbadoes, for this port, was unfortunately cast away, on Duck Island Rock, near the Isle of Shoals, in a very thick fog, and the sea running high, the vessel immediately bilged and sunk; Capt. Gooding and a boy passenger were drowned, the brig and cargo and considerable tackle were lost. This fatal catastrophe happened solely by a most ignorant and imprudent information given him by a master of a vessel from Boston, bound to the Eastward: who, upon his asking the distance from Cape Ann, told him it was 35 leagues, by which Capt. Gooding made too great a dependence, and thought to run in nearer the land, but about 6 hours after he was in among the breakers as he had not seen that vessel his own judgment had determined to heave the brig to till morning. It is hoped this event will remind others, how greatly injurious to mariners, such uncertain informations frequently prove.
