Secures Reconsideration of Playground Ordinance
Ald. Bantz secured a reconsideration of the ordinance providing for the management of the public playgrounds at the adjourned meeting of the board of aldermen yesterday, the measure being sent to the committee on streets.
Mr. Bantz explained that he had been informed that the ordinance that had been passed by the aldermen was not the one drawn by Assistant Corporation Attorney Frankel, and which it was supposed was being acted upon. For this reason he thought there should be a reconsideration of the action of Tuesday evening, when the ordinance was passed under suspension of the rules.
W. E. Bramhall appeared before the board of park commissioners Tuesday and secured an indorsement of the measure which, Ald. Bantz claims, puts the playgrounds in charge of a playgrounds committee of three, except that the park board pays the salaries of the employes. The object of a number of the members of the council was to put the playgrounds absolutely under the control of the park board, without interference from any source, and the reconsideration was secured to make this possible.
Under the existing conditions the ordinance will be publicly considered before the committee, with the issue tightly drawn as to where the responsibility for the management of the playgrounds shall rest. There is every indication of the park board being favored upon the ground that the expense of administration would be much less under such conditions.
