In truth, the historian Lecky should be added by many like our late lieutenants who ostrich-like are burying their heads in the sand as the storm approaches. In his History of 18th century (vol I chap I) he says: "That Catholicism indeed can never be traced merely as a religion. It is a great and highly organized kingdom, representing a sort of nationality and possessing geographical frontiers guarded by a sovereign, pervading temporal politics with its manifold influence and attracting to itself much of the enthusiasm which would otherwise flow in national channels. The intimate correspondence between its priests in many lands, the disciplined unity of their political action, the almost absolute authority they exercise over large classes, and their usually almost complete detachment from purely national or patriotic interests have often, in critical times, proved a most serious political danger, and they have sometimes pursued a temporal policy eminently aggressive, sanguinary, unscrupulous and ambitious."
To Anti-Christ,
Mr. Pecot: Mr. Purcell, he was the archbishop who got the purse and the people came to the realization of the fact that it was a sell. Therefore, the man was properly called Purcell. But why do not you make that $4,000,000 good? Why do you not pay the 200 creditors and avoid their barking after you like a pack of hounds? You have had your Satolli to tell the people that you will pay them not a dollar more. Now let me give you a small amount of advice. It pays to be honest. You may not "go much on religion," and think that doctrine is for children and weak-minded women, but you will find that before another century rolls around the "sell" that emanated from your organization, called a church, has reacted and you are the fellow that is "sold." The people, and the friends of the people, who have lost money by this archbishop will commence a fight against you and your church; and twice the amount will not be able to erase the evil effects caused by it against your church. You are playing so wild, is it not evidence that you are nearing the end of your game. You are making enemies, fast enough, turn about and try to make some friends.
