COAL IN GEORGIA.

[From the Milledgeville Statesman]

Georgia has until lately been supposed to be destitute of that valuable production, fossil coal, which is not only serviceable in certain manufactures but is essential to the comfort of the citizens generally as the forests disappear before the progress of cultivation. Though as rich in the mineral as she is acknowledged to be in the vegetable kingdom,

it is now reduced to a certainty that coal of this description is to be found in our State. In sinking a well, about four miles below Marion in Twiggs county the digger penetrated a bed of it between four and five feet in depth. The coal ignites readily and possesses the properties common to that of England. The extent not known, as the article is at present of no account in this neighborhood seldom found in small quantities, it is reasonable to suppose that it will be a fortune to the possessor. Should a bed of rich iron ore be discovered in that part calculable; but even without such an accompaniment

Indeed we hail for our State, than the discovery of the richest mines of gold or silver
