Matrimonial Complications Lead to Arrests.
Mrs. Albert C. Grant and Lewis Blair
are in jail at Bennington, charged with
adultery. They claim to have been married
at White Creek, N. Y., three weeks
ago. Albert C. Grant, the complainant,
says that 21 years ago he married a girl in
North Adams. Her parents raised objections
to the marriage, claiming that she
was not 16 years old, and he was notified
by the court that the marriage was annulled.
Soon after he married the woman
who was recently married to Blair. He
states that her name was Amy Stetson of
Shaftsbury, but that she was married under
the name of Helen May Stetson in order
to deceive her parents. They have
lived together, Grant says, as man and
wife for nearly 25 years and have a son
and daughter, aged 20 and 18. For the
past 18 years they have lived in Bennington,
but previous to that time they lived
at Berlin, N. Y. Grant, who is nearly 51
years old, is a mason by trade and until recently
had worked for six or seven years
in the mill of the Valentine Knitting company.
Mrs. Grant, or Mrs. Blair, who is
nearly 50 years old, claims that she never
was the lawful wife of Grant, as he was
never legally separated from the girl he
married at North Adams. Blair is a
Frenchman about 35 years old.
