The cause of the extraordinary delay of the Southern Mail, due here on Sunday morning, has at length transpired. The mail having been detained on Saturday night at Newark, was feloniously carried off by some villains unknown. In a commercial country, an act which immediately strikes at the security of correspondence, must be considered as a crime of alarming magnitude; and which, if not instantly checked, must be pregnant with evils of a most pernicious tendency. In every European nation, attempts to rob or carry off the mail are always attended with the most exemplary punishment of the offenders, when discovered. We are informed that a strict search is making for the perpetrators of this villainy, and cannot avoid expressing our hope, that on conviction, their punishment may be such as to be an example to deter others from attempting a crime so injurious in its nature to every class of society.

Since the above was wrote, we hear that the mail was found entire at some distance from the house from which it was taken, unopened—supposed to be done for a trick: A good caution to those who carry the mails, to be more careful.
