Employment of Force.
Insane demagogues are threatening to put down Democrats and Conservatives—the mass of the people in fact—by force. It is a foolish and idle threat. There is no argument in it—no more than there is in the terms "Butternut" and "Copperhead." It is one thing to call hard names, to threaten men, to imprison, shoot and hang them, and quite another, to refute their arguments and silence the principles they advocate.
The threats of the Abolitionists to employ force against their political opponents betrays the weakness of their cause. It shows that they are afraid of the people—afraid to trust their views and policy to the ordeal of free, open and manly discussion. When a revolutionary faction is weak and tottering to its fall, it always becomes cruel, intolerant and proscriptive. Such is the teaching of history, and such the lesson the Abolition faction is reading the world at this hour.
