Hope From Georgia

The defeat of Governor Gene Talmadge of Georgia for renomination
was the most satisfactory news to come out of the primaries of last
week. There is hope from Georgia.

Talmadge, and his type of demagogue, represent America official-
dom at its worst. His campaign issue of "white supremacy" raised to
hide the mass of corruption and dictatorial mismanagement during
his reign in Georgia was roundly repudiated by the people of Georgia.

Last year when the white students of the University of Georgia
burned Talmadge in effigy for playing politics with the schools the
"hand writing appeared on the wall" and the advocates of racial intol-
erance in Georgia were immediately on the defensive.

In a dying attempt to cause trouble between the races and detract
the voters' attention from the real issues the despicable Talmadge an-
nounced three weeks ago that he had ordered the Georgia State Home
Guard "on the alert" because "attempted assaults on white women by
Negroes were increasing."

For once the old familiar appeal to prejudice did not work and
Gene Talmadge is now free to join hands with the master racist superior-
ity exponent Adolph Hitler.
