Mistake Rectified.—Our readers will recollect that in the paragraph published in our last, under the head of "Argus Independence," we asserted that the writer of "A True American," had "professedly been one of the democratic party." It appears, however, by the following communication from our correspondent, that the information on which we grounded that opinion, is incorrect. Justice to the venerable author of "A true American," demands a correction; and we gladly embrace the present opportunity of making it.—The Argus slang about "matiliation," we deem unworthy our notice—they have only caught a Tartar.
MR. SHIRLEY,
I observed in your last paper an editorial notice over the piece signed "True American," stating that the Author had been a democrat. As I am personally acquainted with the avowed author of that piece I can state that he never avowed principles so contrary to those of 1775 as the doctrines of democracy. He was a man who in those "times which tried men's souls"— was a member of the convention of this State which adopted the Federal Constitution—he advocated and supported that constitution, and does now condemn the violence of party spirit and oppression which threatens to destroy the fair fabric of national liberty.
I deem this statement an act of justice to the author above alluded to; and have no doubt you will, with your known candour, correct an error unpleasant to his feelings.
