Mediation gets under way Monday, May 23, in Chicago on the issue of a wage increase for yardmen working the five-day week as sought by the BRT in the recent wage-rules movement.
Leverett Edwards, member of National Mediation Board, will direct the proceedings for NMB. Assistant President V. W. Satterwhite, who has been in charge of the movement, will represent the Brotherhood.
Mediation of the yardmen's issue was set last week and is the latest development out of the wage-rules drive which brought an "open end" agreement May 11.
A joint application for mediation was signed May 12 by chairmen of Eastern, Western and Southeastern Carriers' Conference Committees and representatives of the BRT.
Under provisions of the May 11 "open end" pact, men who are required to work on excessively long freight trains will receive premium pay based on the number of cars. This came as something new in rail labor history.
After June 1, yard conductors will be paid an additional $1.10 over the basic daily rate of yard brakemen.
