Full Text

Hague, Feb. 15. We now begin plainly to perceive, that France is in earnest, and that if she can, she is resolved to have us at her Mercy. There is no Doubt that the Expedition against Brussels is that great Blow with which we were threatened, and a great Blow it would have proved if it had been attended with that Success which M. Saxe expected. But the Weather, on one Side, and the Vigour, with the Intrepidity and Diligence of Prince Waldeck, on the other, have not only rendered it doubtful, but; if we may depend upon some Advices, desperate. It is certain he plays for a large Stake. For several of our best Battalions are in Brussels. and if the French could have brought up the Cannon in any Time, they might have been in some Danger. As it is, M. Saxe has been there a full Week without doing much, if we except that he has spoiled the finest Walks and Avenues that were about any great City in Europe, and all this in Order to raise Batteries to be ready when the Cannon came up; but Thanks to the soaking Showers that have fallen for five Days past, the Morasses, thro' which his Cannon must necessarily pass, are become impassable, and it is thought it would be Yesterday before the first 6 Pieces would arrive at his Head Quarters.
