Millions of Dollars Worth of Additional Taxable Property to Be Added to Rolls This Year.

Millions of dollars worth of additional taxable property, the issue of patent to thousands of acres of land and thousands of dollars going into the state treasury in the shape of taxes will be some of the first results of the Borah three-year homestead law.

Within the next 90 days, patent will probably be issued to 40,640 acres of land in the Boise district alone. With an average of 160 acres to each of the 254 patentees, the total will be 40,640 acres of land. Valued on an average of $20 an acre, the total assessed valuation of the land that will receive final papers in the next 90 days will be $812,800.

The first 90 days of the workings of the homestead law is but a sample of what is to come, the land officers believe. Figuring, however, on an even stream of applications for patent all through the year, the value of the land that will be patented and become taxable under the state laws will be $2,438,400 and a total of 121,920 acres.

These figures are a revelation to those who have not kept thoroughly posted on the workings of the new law. They show but the effect on the Boise district alone. The Blackfoot land office does almost as much business as does the Boise district. This is also true of the Hailey office while the ones at Coeur d'Alene and at Lewiston also do a large volume of business in the course of a year.

Playing with the figures again and supposing that the other offices do an equal business in this particular branch of their work as does the Boise district, the startling sum of $3,251,200 in taxable property would be thrown in the hands of the tax assessors in the next 90 days and the total sum of $9,753,600 in the course of the first year on a total of about 487,680 acres of land available during the 12-month period.

The estimates on the effect the law will have on the Boise district were made at the federal land office here yesterday when the number of applications for proof were made to the register and the receiver. It was found that 254 homesteaders in this district had asked for the final proof papers that would give them patents to their land. From this, it was figured out the other facts that show just how the law will effect this district within the next 90 days and, on that estimate, for the first year that it is in effect.
