Full Text

Fifty-seven Persons Murdered by Pirates.

—Singapore, January 21.—Her Majesty's steamer Onrust, when about five days steaming above Banjermassing, was attacked by about six hundred men in prahus. The crew had not time to fire more than one shot when the assailants were in possession, and after murdering all on board, (seven officers and fifty men,) they ran the vessel aground.

In reference to this the Globe says: 'We have made inquiries at the Admiralty and we find that the prefix H. M. S. to the vessel must be incorrect. In all probability the vessel lost is in the service of his Netherlands Majesty, if it is a vessel of war. To-day's mail has brought accounts of all the vessels in her majesty's service which could have been anywhere in the neighborhood, and there is no report of any such occurrence. The vessel is probably named Onrust, and was attacked after five days steaming from Banjermassing, up the river Banjer, in Borneo, which forms part of a Dutch province.'

The Globe clarified it was not a British vessel based on Admiralty inquiries.
