FOR THE WHIG.

Alas! if life is but a dream.
O! let it be of heart felt love-
That sacred ray, that holy gleam,
From minds of purest mould above.
Let others' dreams be any toy,-
Gold, honors, fame, e'en regal power;
But O! let mine be still the joy
That glows in first-love's fevered hour.
Life is a Dream! most glorious thought!
Then slumber every care and woe;
And every good, "so fiercely sought,"
Elude my eager grasp.-But O!
Still let my dream be ever one
With which my early life begun,--
A fond delirium of the heart,
A dear delusion of the brain;
A phantom that, with dextrous art,
Sways, o'er the realms of joy and pain,
A sceptre's talismanic power,
Makes minutes, years:-an age, an hour.
