FRANKLIN'S WISE ADVICE
One of the most famous names in American history is that of Benjamin Franklin. His career as one of the most influential founders of the United States government, and his immeasurable services in the early history of the republic have entitled him to the everlasting gratitude of the American people.
It should not be forgotten that he followed for many years the trade of a printer in which his experience was an important factor in his development. His "Poor Richard's Almanac" was a very famous publication, and gave him an opportunity to communicate his wise philosophy to the world.
One famous saying of his was to the effect that "time is money." If some people are inclined to waste time, they could well reflect on that thought. Time can be regarded as a person's capital. If people use it wisely and profitably, it brings rich rewards in the shape of increased intelligence and skill in their occupation. Time spent in reading and study helps one to understand life better, and become more familiar with the world and its affairs.
This does not mean that people should not take time for recreation and social life. An old saying conveys the idea that all work and no play makes one a dull boy.
Franklin was famous for his charm of manner and friendly ways, and no doubt social contact played a large part in his life. Recreation also has high uses. It relieves the strain of daily life, and after wholesome diversion people return to work with new energy and effectiveness.
Benjamin Franklin gave a wonderful example of how to make the best use of time. His eager mind was ever busy seeking information and studying the solution of human problems. He was extremely ingenious as a scientist and inventor. He combined a wise philosophy about human life with the technical ability to solve practical problems. He had to a wonderful degree the useful faculty which is called the inquiring mind.
